Areas of Expertise

John is a perceptive coach, who helps business people to see their challenges from different perspectives, unlocking new avenues.

John is a systems thinker, John is able to integrate ideas from a wide variety of disciplines and drive transformational change across traditional boundaries.

“I like to approach problems from first principles, with deceptively simple questions which cut through the noise to get to the underlying beliefs and assumptions”.

John practices radical candour – the ability to provide clear, direct insights that others might hesitate to voice. He specialises in identifying and addressing the “elephant in the room” in a way that engages positive change. He turns potential conflicts into opportunities for collaboration.

That’s why John chose to call his consultancy “Daft Laddie”: a mix of playful curiosity, sharp insight and unconventional thinking.

Areas for Work

John is based in Scotland, but happy to work with clients anywhere in the UK and around the globe.

Background and clientele

John’s background was originally in technology roles as a software developer and technical architect, before moving into programme delivery. He cut his teeth at GE Capital where he became a Six Sigma black belt.

“I was very fortunate to go beyond the standard training with early exposure to change management and design thinking,” says John. He quickly realised that change without acceptance was of limited value.

John moved into large-scale programme delivery in financial services, often being parachuted into troubled programmes that needed to be put into turnaround. He honed his ability to diagnose root causes and convince executive teams to make painful but necessary changes.

“As I progressed in my career, I became less interested in the nuts and bolts and more interested in how teams come together, how they make decisions, and why they get stuck”.

John now works with senior teams at any scale. John primarily works with clients in Scotland but is open to global assignments.

Biggest learn in business

Most people want to do a great job, but sometimes become trapped in ways of thinking that stop them achieving their potential.

Something you might not know about John…

John has a long-standing interest in disability issues, and chaired the employee disability network at RBS, doubling the size of the membership and introducing a training course to help people with disabilities regain their confidence and achieve their potential.

“One of my proudest moments was when a colleague asked if I was the John Brady who introduced this course – they said it had changed their life”.
